Educational Programs and Outreach
The Coronado Historical Association strongly believes that educational outreach plays a significant role in teaching youth that history is alive and important.
To that end, the Educational Outreach Program offered at the Museum of History and Art includes tours and hands on experiences for school children not only in Coronado but throughout San Diego County as well.
NEW: Morning at the Museum

NEW: SPEAKERS BUREAU Coronado Museum of History & Art
Educational programs are available for showing in the community that focus on the history of Coronado. Museum staff or volunteers will arrange, by appointment, to be at your school, business, service club, gathering, or church to show one of the following films on Coronado history:
1. "Those Times at Tent City." This narrated DVD runs 24 minutes and features 101 rarely seen images of Tent City, which was a seasonal village that existed just south of the Hotel del Coronado from 1900 through 1939. The film is also available in a 13-minute length for smaller agendas. The film (in both formats) is fast, entertaining for all ages, and educational. Audience: 8-80.
2. "The History of Coronado through Postcards." This is a half hour
slide show that requires narration. A DVD is in the works for this show which will create easier options for viewing. Also, a shorter version is in the works. The script and postcard images are a real crowd pleaser. Some of the messages on the rear of the cards are also shared, which help paint a picture of Coronado-past. Audience: 8-80.
3. "History of North Island." This narrated DVD is a work in
progress, and will run about half an hour. When complete, it will
consist of many rare photos of early North Island and Rockwell Field,
and take a close look at the infancy of flight in particular
military flight. Images show early biplanes in action, ground crews,
factories, aerials of Coronado, shots from Hollywood films made at
North Island, and some of the famous names of early flight such as
Lindbergh and Curtiss.
4. "Introduction to the Coronado Historical Association." This is a
seven-minute, narrated introduction to CHA and the Museum. It is
often used as an introductory piece to a longer film, or a precursor
to questions and answers.
Future programs will include the "Life of John D. Spreckels,"
"Ferryboats in the Mist," and others. Shorts are available on the
Shipwreck Monte Carlo and the 1923 Hotel del Coronado Laundry truck.
Another PowerPoint is available on the attempts to rescue a wooden
train car that operated in Coronado in the 1880s.
Note: The Coronado Museum of History & Art can provide a projector,
laptop, sound system for DVDs, but not a viewing screen nor a
microphone (which would be required for some films and large groups).
All shows require some ability to darken a room, and can be shown to
groups of 20-150.
For more information contact the Coronado Museum at 619.435.7242.
Donations and honorariums are excepted, and all donations are tax
deductible. Again, all programs are done by appointment, and the
Museum accepts support through memberships and donations.

County grants have underwritten the development of curriculum for grades K-12 based on California State Protocol, and incorporated such disciplines as geometry, biology, and architecture in the study of Coronado's history.
The Museum of History and Art is also committed to other types of educational outreach for high school and college students, as well as adults. Internships, lecture series, concerts, workshops and demonstrations are presented to further support the Association's mission of education.
