    About Coronado Historical Association

    Who we are.....

Coronado Historic Museum ExteriorThe history of this unique community is what led a group of concerned citizens to establish the Coronado Historical Association in 1969.

Through exhibitions at a local bank, lectures, and Christmas Home Tours, the Association grew in membership, collections, and prestige.

In 1987, the Board of Directors approved the purchase of 1126 Loma Avenue to house the first-ever permanent home of the Archives and to establish a Museum.

After 12 years of collecting and preserving Coronado's history, the Association's collection outgrew the historic home on Loma Avenue. In 1999, the Board approved a relocation proposal to the historic Bank of Commerce building at 1100 Orange Avenue. This move resulted in the creation of the Museum of History and Art. The Museum opened to the public in October 2000.

Now in its fifth year in its new home, the Association continues to celebrate many wonderful milestones. The opening of a new, state of the art Library and Archives, in 2002, has once again allowed researchers, homeowners, and businesses to obtain valuable information regarding Coronado's past. Its exhibitions continue to delight and inspire local residents and visitors from around the globe. In 2002, the Association was proud to launch "Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Thirty Years Later", it's first-ever nationally traveling exhibition, which has since traveled to over 19 locations across the United States and Guam. Ultimately, the exhibit will be given to the Library of Congress for permanent preservation. In 2004, the Association stepped up its preservation efforts by announcing the "Keep it in Coronado" Salvage Program to protect and salvage unique and historical architectural elements from buildings that are being demolished in Coronado. And in 2005, it expanded it's educational programming by producing the "Curious Kids Adventure Pack", an activity guidebook for children and adults to explore Coronado together. All of these efforts reaffirm the Association's strong commitment to its mission.

    Our Mission is.....

To encourage and promote the appreciation, knowledge and understanding of Coronado's unique art, architecture, history and other historical resources.
