Teaching Coronado HistoryEducation

Coronado has one of the most colorful, interesting histories of any community in the State of California, and Coronado and regional San Diego school children have an opportunity to learn about itl   The Coronado Historical Association works with all third-grade teachers and students and provides a multi-session engaging program that meets the California State Standards for studying 3rd grade Social Studies.

Museum educators provide three hours of instruction in each classroom utilizing copies of historic photos, letters, postcards and scrapbooks from the museum's collection. Students begin to explore the influence of geography on the development of a community and compare current community services and resources to those available 100 years ago. Each class then spends one morning using the Coronado History and Art Museum, the Hotel del Coronado and the downtown historic district as their classroom. Back at school, the children reinforce what they ve learned by talking about it and creating an art project using Coronado materials.

This special curriculum has been designed in full cooperation with the Coronado Unified School District and supports California State Standards for Social Studies and Language Arts. At the end of the school year, another formal evaluation will be conducted and the program adjusted as necessary to ensure its success in future years.

Funds raised from Leslie and Don Budinger, Phyllis Kraus, Mary Gilliland, Coronado Rotary, Coronado Optimists, and an anonymous donor whose children were once 3rd graders in Coronado schools have made the program possible.
