Join the Coronado Historical Association for a presentation exploring the hidden history and little-known stories of Tijuana. As part of the Fall 2025 Wine & Lecture Series, CHA welcomes Professors César Martín Acosta García, Luis Carlos López, and Diego Silverio Saavedra Lara, all Faculty Members of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Autonomous University of Baja California. Their program, Zaragoza Tijuana, offers a compelling look at the city’s historic downtown and its lasting impact on the cultural identity and historical evolution of the U.S.-Mexico border region.

About the Speakers:

Diego Silverio Saavedra Lara

He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and a Master's degree in History from the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas of the same institution. His thesis, "Nuestra patria es el mundo entero, nuestra ley la libertad" (Our Homeland is the Entire World, Our Law is Freedom): Internationalism, Networks, and Anarchist Press on the Mexico-United States Border, 1894-1920, won the Berta Ulloa Award for the best thesis in International History, granted by the National Institute of Historical Studies of the Revolutions of Mexico (INEHRM). During his academic formation, he worked as a research assistant at the Colegio de la Frontera Norte (Colef) in the Department of Social Studies and as a guide at the Museum of the Californias in the Centro Cultural Tijuana. As a professional, he has been a Specialized Researcher in the Research and Documentation Management of the Arts (GIDA) and has worked in teaching at the Instituto Altazor. Currently, he serves as a faculty member in the Bachelor’s degree program in History at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California

Luis Carlos López Ulloa
Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa in 1977, and a resident of Tijuana, Baja California since 1989, he holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), a Master's degree in Education from Tecnológico de Monterrey, and a Ph.D. in Global Development Studies from UABC. He has participated in various academic conferences in Mexico, the United States, Europe, and South America, and has published multiple articles in national and international scholarly journals. His research interests focus on electoral processes and political communities in Baja California, political biography and memoirs, as well as the application of qualitative methods. Among his published books are: Cómo nos ven. Coincidencias y diferencias entre los actores políticos de la alternancia en Baja California (2016), El servicio público del agua en Tijuana: la Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tijuana y el río Colorado, 1982–1995 (2017), and Ruffo. Confesiones y conversaciones con el primer gobernador de oposición en la alternancia mexicana (2020). He currently leads the Zaragoza Tijuana Initiative, which focuses on the recovery, preservation, and dissemination of the history of downtown Tijuana.

César Martín Acosta García

César Martín Acosta García holds a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He is a professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California, where he is in charge of the Sociology undergraduate program. His research focuses on topics related to migration and culture from a sociological perspective.
